SGC125 match v Axe Cliff – home leg

Sherborne hosted the first leg of our SGC125 match against Axe Cliff on Sunday 26th May, the same day as the Club hosted the Dorset County Golf Union Matchplay Championship Semi-Finals and Final.

Naturally the course was in excellent condition, the rough thick enough to become a hazard, the greens running true and reasonably quickly with one or two challenging pin positions.

With teams of 4 pairs of ladies and 6 pairs of gentlemen on each side, and 3 reserves who played as well, the match involved more than 40 people. Judging by the noise in the clubhouse after play, everyone had had a good time playing on what can truly be called a championship course in good company and were making new friends.

Both Sherborne and Axe Cliff are 125 years old this year, both are James Braid courses and the match Sherborne played at Axe Cliff in October 1896 was the first match both our clubs played against another club. We have so much in common.

The Axe Cliff team brought an original James Braid club which they had restored and mounted as a trophy for this match, which is played as a Stableford competition over two legs, home and away, with the home and away scores added together to find the winning team.

Sherborne took home advantage and scored 372 points while Axe Cliff are 35 points behind on 337 points. But will 35 points be sufficient buffer for the away leg ? Its only 3.5 points per pair difference and Axe Cliff have the home advantage for the return leg on 30th June.
