Our winning juniors at the Colin Chataway Trophy held at Crane Valley Golf Club

Junior Colin Chataway Trophy at Crane Valley Golf Club on Wednesday 22 August 2018

Our junior team did us extremely proud by winning the Colin Chataway Trophy for the first time since 1995.

It was a very tense affair at the end as we waited for Matt Drayton (who went out in the last group) to finish his round. We had an outside chance of winning the trophy outright providing he came in with a score of 45 points, pipping Dudsbury who had been the leaders in the Clubhouse all afternoon with what looked like an invincible score of 151 points (all 4 scores to count).

In marches Matt with a magnificent 44 points so we were tied with Dudsbury.   It was then to be decided on the back 9 holes of all 4 scores.  Dudsbury came in with 78 points but Sherborne came in with 79 points.

The team consisting of Ollie Griffiths (34 points), Jack Coward (35 points), Lauren Carty (38 points), and Matt Drayton (44 points) were amazingly calm and they were great ambassadors for our Club. They were all very pleased with their victory, as was yours truly.

Matt was the individual winner of the day, out of a field of 54 players listed to play from 23 different Dorset Golf Clubs and he also won his year group as well.

Other juniors from Sherborne who also played were Elizabeth Ashford and Rory Parnell and we feel that the competition certainly gained them some good experience and my thanks to them for taking part.

Coaching Team

Much of the credit for Sherborne’s success is down to the excellent coaching that our Academy and Junior players receive from Adam and Jon on Saturday mornings and from the individual coaching sessions that really focuses on sharpening their skills and ability.

If you have a child or grandchild, or know of anyone outside of the Club whose children could be well suited to start playing golf, why don’t you give them this opportunity to learn how to play golf from the best coaching team in the County. They don’t have to buy expensive equipment to start with, as we have bought 8 proper junior golf sets for academy use, which is free of charge so that they can literally “Try before they buy “.
