Weekly News Update – Week 41
It is with regret that we announce the death of Simon Jennings on Saturday 23 September 2017 aged 53 from Motor Neurone Disease. Our sympathies are with his wife Clare and family at this sad time.
Fund Raising Day: The start sheet is now available in the Pro Shop for the Texas scramble shotgun start fund raising competition. This is a really fun format where Teams were drawn prior to play from the list of names on the signup sheet. Raffle and prizes to be won on the day!
Last weekend the DCGU Inter-Club Foursomes were played at Ferndown. Representing SGC in the Handicap were last year’s winners Terry Pettifer and Kevin Redman who finished 9th and in the Scratch Matt Chant and Reece Wilson who finished 18th overall.
The inaugural Captain and Pro away trip was held at the Vale of Glamorgan Resort in South Wales. The 36 hole festival of social golf was well supported over the 2 days with a party of 28 golfers! Day one and round 1 was played on the Lake Course (6436 yds) with fantastic weather followed by a KO putting contest and finally a 3 course evening meal and night cap in the bar afterwards! Day 2, round 2 was more about stamina playing the very long Wales International Championship Course (7433 yards) in conditions slightly more challenging than those on day 1!
Many thanks to Bill and Al for making it happen, it was suggested that next year the venue may be further south in a warmer climate!
Round up of competitions and Club matches (from 2nd to 8th October):
Ladies section: Although we had a damp start to the Autumn Closed on 5th October, the weather soon changed and the sun shone. A good entry of 44 players for the Medal Round and the prestigious Maud Peacocke Trophy was won by Carol-Anne Raisbeck with a best nett score of 76.
Sherborne was pulled out of the hat last year to host the annual meeting of the Dorset Lady Vice Captains, and this was hosted by Jane Close last week. It was useful to be able to exchange ideas, especially with those clubs that have the facility to book a tee time online for their Ladies’ day competitions, and after coffee, 9 ladies had an enjoyable game of golf on our beautiful course.
Seniors section: Club friendly v Yeovil win (5 – 1)
Next Wednesday DCGU secretary with Chris Watson and Kevin Redman will be remeasuring the golf course and this will include the Blue tees and a 9 hole measured course.
Membership Offer. The Club is currently promoting winter golf membership. If you have family, friends or colleagues who might be interested in learning or playing then follow this post and click here.
For your HEALTH & SAFETY please note that golf bags and trolleys are not to be left inside by the front entrance door. TROLLEY STORE, if you use the trolley store please always fold your trolley before putting in the store to allow space for all others to use.
The stimp meter reading on Wednesday was 10.50 feet.
Important points to remember:
ALWAYS check the Club (PDF) diary on the Clubs website before planning your golf.
ALWAYS on arrival check for any course updates which can be found on the external “white board” or if in doubt ask the Pro Shop. Daily course updates can be due to weather or course maintenance.
ALWAYS remember to repair divot and pitch marks!
ALWAYS keep up the pace of play and encourage members in your groups to play READY GOLF. SGC supports the R&A in READY GOLF and therefore the Club will NOT tolerate any SLOW play.
